Sick

John Hyams created the sharp, unique zombie series Black Summer (my review), so he knows his way around murderous exploits. The premise for this film is simple: 2 girls head to a remote cabin to sit out the COVID quarantine, but a mysterious killer does what killers do. As for that, the deadly dispatches are juicy fun (if you enjoy that sort of thing) and the jump scares are plentiful. Such a seemingly simple setup manages to keep interest and even provides a healthy helping of thrills, thanks to Hyams’ taut direction and co-writer Kevin Williams smart script (he’s best known for Scream and The Vampire Diaries). Sick is a healthy entry into the classic slasher vein and certainly much more enjoyable than anything else out there right now (M3GAN, I mean you). 4 out of 5 stars (4 / 5)
